Sonia Upton

Client Relations Specialist

Dr. Sonia Upton is a Client Relations Specialist supporting Strategic Communications development for the Client Relations Department at WIDA. In this role, Sonia focuses on developing external communications and internal coordination for the department. She manages the development and dissemination of WIDA communications including annual reports, Consortium Membership Guide, and manages consortium wide meetings. Additionally, Sonia is the liaison supporting subcommittees and ad hoc committees for WIDA and member states.

Sonia’s experience in education includes 18 years in the classroom teaching ELLs in Kentucky and working at the Kentucky Department of Education as a Title III-LEP/Immigrant Program Consultant. Sonia holds a B.S. in Elementary Education (grades K-8), a M.A. in Early Childhood Education, Reading Instruction, and English as a Second Language. She also has her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Organizational Development. Sonia's past work in the field of education includes work as an ESL Program Reviewer for Kentucky Universities, presenter at regional and national conferences, and a contributing author to various publications supporting educators working with English language learners.
