Kira Cunningham

WIDA Professional Development Specialist

Kira Cunningham is a Professional Development Outreach Specialist with WIDA.  Beginning her career in public schools in a large refugee resettlement community in the eastern United States, Kira has spent the past 17 years invested in building relationships with students and families from diverse backgrounds.  She is passionately committed to the academic success of English language learners and to supporting the classroom teachers who play such a critical role in student self-confidence and academic success.  She has worked with at-risk preschools, Migrant Education, and as a classroom teacher in Title I elementary schools in both English and dual-language English/Spanish contexts.  Most recently she helped develop a co-teaching program and worked closely with elementary teachers to plan and deliver lessons focused on both language development and content learning.  In addition to working in K-12 public schools, Kira has also taught adult learners Spanish and ESL at the community college level.

Kira holds a B.A. in Social Work from Goshen College and a M.A. in Education from the University of Michigan.
