Group Development and Peer Review of Research Proposals - by Joanne Stewart In-class planning handout ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY RESEARCH PROJECT PLANNING SESSION Please follow all instructions and get started now. Move your desk so that you're sitting face-to-face with your lab partner. One of you should read the following instructions aloud: "Each person in the class is required to complete and turn in this worksheet. For the first two parts, you will be working with your lab partner, and for the last part, you and your partner will be working with another group. Dr. Stewart's role today is strictly as "consultant." She does not expect you to have all the answers to all the questions today, but you are expected to come to the first "research project" lab, ready to answer them." Your name ___________________________________ Your partner's name ____________________________ Part 1: Brainstorming with your partner (11:35-11:50)
Spend 20 minutes brainstorming with your partner on research project
ideas. This is not very much time, so assign one partner the job of
timekeeper to keep the discussion on track and assure that you finish
within the allotted time.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.Part 2: Choosing a project (11:50-12:00) Which one of your five ideas would you like to do for a research project? With your partner, spend 10 minutes answering the following questions.
Part 3: Sharing the plan (12:00-12:15)
Get together with another group. Describe your idea to them. Discuss the
following questions with them, and record any suggestions that are made.
Switch roles. Again, you will only have a short time for this discussion, so
assign a timekeeper to watch the dock.
Part 4: Evaluation (12:15-12:20) By yourself, answer the following evaluation questions. After you have turned in the completed worksheet, you are free to leave.
