MathExcel: Calculus Among Friends

Why I liked this activity
I wanted to bring the Workshop Model here because it looked like so much fun to be around classrooms like that -- unconventional classrooms with motivated students helping each other. The esprit, the atmosphere, is absolutely marvelous; it's intoxicating, in fact. And it's turned out to be even better than I thought it would be, so I've become an evangelist, you might say. It's so much fun to turn other people on to this model of his, because it's like nothing else I have ever seen. It brings out the best in everybody connected with it.
We started out as a broadly based affirmative action enterprise but have never restricted admission on that basis. Even without recruiting, the people who sign up are almost invariably either women, minorities, or rural students. Since 1990, we've served almost 700 students.
