Students speak out on Collaborative Learning   by Cathy Middlecamp What do students see as the advantages of collaborative learning? The disadvantages? Are there any personal factors that influence their answers? What suggestions would students offer to their teachers? Last fall, I taught a large nonmajors general chemistry course that included a number of small group activities. I asked my students to express their thoughts on cooperative learning. Actually, it was somewhat of a bribe, as I offered each student five extra credit points for sending me an email essay. I explained that their thoughts were important both personally to me as a teacher and because I was serving on several advisory boards. Hence, they could speak their minds both locally and to a wider national audience.
