Cathy Middlecamp Picture

Cathy Middlecamp is the Director of the Chemistry Learning Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She teaches both general chemistry for non-majors and a graduate seminar on the teaching of chemistry. Over the past 20 years, she has designed, supervised and taught in a number of programs for students underrepresented in the sciences, both collegiate and pre-collegiate. She is co-author of the book, How to Survive and Even Excel in General Chemistry and a current author for the ACS publication, Chemistry in Context. She is a member of national advisory boards for projects with the American Association of Colleges and Universities and for Project Kaleidoscope. Other professional interests include teaching with the World Wide Web, bridging women's studies and science, and chemistry across cultures.

She did her undergraduate studies at Cornell University (1968-72), graduating Phi Beta Kappa. She came to UW-Madison in 1972, earning her doctoral degree in chemistry in 1976. She also has a masters degree in counseling from the School of Education. She also is involved in community issues in Madison and with her husband was a founding member of Luke House, the evening meal site of the Community Meal Program. She has a black belt in Aikido and enjoys teaching aikido students (a nice change of pace from chemistry!).
