For those interested, I've been "doing" web stuff
for about 6 years, on and off. I've designed 3 sites: the University
of Wisconsin-Madison's General Chemistry site (major revisions by
other web gurus have since been made), this College Level
One web site (part of the National Institute
for Science Education, NISE, program), and the University of
Wisconsin-Madison's Chemistry Department's Chemistry Learning
Center web site.
On the technical side of things, I used an Apple Macintosh for nearly
all my work (a PowerMac 7600, 120 MHz, at home and either a PowerMac
7200, 200 MHz, or PowerMac G3, 300 MHz, at work). I had between 64
and 96 megabytes of RAM on these computers and usually a 6.4 GB hard
drive. On the softer side of things, I've used Adobe Photoshop 5.5, Macromedia
Fireworks 3.0, BoxTop GIFmation 2.1 (came free with my animated clip art),
and a variety of other shareware and freeware. I used Microsoft Word 6.0 as
an editor for most of the web pages' html code, and occassionally
used Adobe
PageMill 3.0, Macromedia Fireworks 3.0, and Bare Bones BBEdit Lite 4.0
(freeware) to lesser degrees. I used Adobe Acrobat 3.0 to
converted files to the pdf (portable document file) format, and Microsoft Word
98 for Windows to convert to the PC Word files. Finally, the
database work was done with Microsoft Visual InterDev and placed on a SQL
server.
