A major objective of the Institute is to promote sustained interest in science and mathematics reform among educational policymakers and practitioners. To meet this objective, the Interacting with Professional Audiences team identifies and meets with key stakeholders to encourage their participation in NISE activities and to recruit them as Collaborating Organizations of the NISE. For example, key initiatives such as the National Science Education Standards project at the National Academy of Sciences and the professional development initiatives within National Science Teachers Association and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics are targeted for ongoing coordination and sharing of information. In addition, to maximize resources and reach the widest possible audience, NISE identifies and works with other key leaders from mathematics and science reform initiatives and general education reform efforts (e.g., Systemic Initiative projects, Council of Chief State School Officers standards project). Representatives from these initiatives participate in the Annual Forum and receive NISE publications. The IPA team also consults with the Collaborating Organizations to gain input to NISE products and NISE-sponsored conferences and meetings. NISE staff seek to make substantive connections between the findings and outputs from the Institute and the needs and issues of the practitioner and policymaker audiences the Collaborating Organizations represent. To date 19 organizations have been recruited as Collaborating Organizations of NISE, representing scientific societies, mathematics and science education, higher education and educational policy organizations, and business and industry.
