Brown Bag Lecture
Creating Technology for Middle School: Instructor vs. Student Focus
Presented by Marco Molinaro
December 15, 1999
12:00 - 1:00pm
Room 259 Educational Sciences Building
Over the last five years of creating multimedia materials, Dr. Marco Molinaro has worked on projects that range from purely instructor-centered to student-centered. During this presentation, he will share his experiences in creating these materials and provide preliminary information on how the materials are being used. Among products featured will be various Full Option Science System (FOSS)* CD-ROMs, the FOSSWEB* interactive Web site, the Hands-On Universe (HOU)+ CD-ROM, and various tools under construction. Molinaro will explore current thinking and direction to address the impediments to the use of technology in middle schools, while expanding a learner-centered focus.
*FOSS program materials are designed to meet the challenge of providing meaningful science education for all students in diverse American classrooms and to prepare them for life in the 21st century.
HOU program materials are designed to involve students in real astronomical research by using real data and tools.
Marco Molinaro is director of multimedia development for the Lawrence Hall of Science and former multimedia director of the Modular Chemistry Consortium Systemic Reform Project, at UC-Berkeley. As an NISE Fellow, Molinaro is helping create a product to engage SMET faculty in productive uses of instructional technology to help students learn. Part of the College Level One Team’s Institute for Learning Technology (ILT).
