NISE Brown Bag Lecture
Facilitating Systemic Reform in Urban School Systems
Presented by Jeanne Rose Century
February 12, 1998, 12:00 - 1:00pm
Jeanne Rose Century is an NISE Fellow as well as a Senior Research Associate and Associate Project Director in the Center for Science Education at the Education Development Center (EDC) in Newton, Massachusetts. Her past work at the EDC includes her role as a curriculum writer and research associate on two NSF-funded urban curriculum development projects. Her current work primarily focuses on the Center for Urban Science Education Reform (CUSER), a project that provides professional development and technical assistance for 22 urban school districts engaged in science education reform and is working to establish a permanent network of urban science educators.
In her presentation, Century will discuss the Center for Urban Science Education Reform, a unique collaboration of urban educators, community partners, curriculum developers, technical assistants, staff development specialists, and evaluators, all of whom are currently involved in long-term efforts to reform science education. The Center draws from, and builds on, the comprehensive knowledge base, strategic expertise, and practical experience of its collaborators to support the initiation, implementation, and institutionalization of systemic K-6/K-8 science education reform efforts in 24 urban districts nationwide. The Center also is establishing a permanent network of urban educators communicating with one another and working together with the capacity to provide assistance to additional urban districts attempting to reform their science education programs in the future.
