Brown Bag Lecture

Minds of Our Own. Cognition and Learning in the Natural Sciences.

Presented by Joel Mintzes

September 22, 1998, 12:00 - 1:00pm
Room 259 Educational Sciences Building

One of the projects that NISE Fellow Joel Mintzes is currently working on is a Public Broadcasting System miniseries on cognition and learning in the natural sciences. The National Science Foundation, the Annenberg Corporation for Public Broadcasting Mathematics and Science Project, and the Smithsonian Institution underwrote the series. The program, produced by the Science Media Group at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, is entitled Minds of Our Own. The focus is on learners' conceptual understanding and "misconceptions" in the physical and biological sciences. Mintzes will show about 30 minutes from one program and then respond to questions and comments.

Joel Mintzes is professor of biological sciences at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) and adjunct professor of science education at North Carolina State University. He has served as director of the UNCW Introductory Biology Program for 25 years. His research interests focus on conceptual development and cognitive processes in biology.
