Studies of English and Writing Instruction

WCER research found it’s important for teachers of English and language arts to consider three activities simultaneously when developing curriculum plans—student reading skills, writing skills, and thinking skills. Student achievement improves when the three activities complement each other and when teachers engage students in authentic conversations about their reading assignments and writing projects. Yet most students in high school English classes do not receive the kind of instruction in which interactive discourse raises expectations for students as thinkers and learners, and encourages students to become engaged in their studies.
