Factors Influencing College Choice

May 26, 2009

Studying how high school seniors choose colleges, Ruth López Turley finds that students have a wide range of colleges within commuting distance. (Students in the East tend to have the most colleges nearby, while students in the South tend to have the fewest). After important student and zip code-level factors are taken into account, each additional college in proximity is associated with a small but significant increase in the odds of applying to college, especially a four-year college. There is evidence that colleges in proximity seem to increase the odds of applying to college because they make the transition to college logistically, financially, and emotionally easier.
