New Working Paper Posted

April 20, 2009

A recent study of middle school students’ conceptual understanding of algebraic equations revealed two main gaps in their understanding. They lacked a robust understanding of the operation of multiplication, and they had difficulty combining multiple mathematical relationships into coherent stories. Study participants were 257 sixth- and seventh-grade students. They were asked to solve one set of algebraic equations and to generate story problems corresponding with another set of equations.
