Producing Evidence-Based Claims

March 30, 2009

National Science Foundation grantees use evidence-based claims to improve their programs and to identify practices that could be replicated to improve K-16 STEM education. Matt Hora, Susan Millar, and colleagues assessed the ways that participants in the 2008 NSF Learning Network Conference (LNC) generate their evidence-based claims. One positive finding was that some projects appear to use sophisticated evaluation designs and logic models. But many project personnel lack training in social science research, educational research, or evaluation methods. The study recommends strategies for improving the LNC community’s expertise in evaluation methodology. These include focusing efforts on training and professional development workshops and exploring methodological advances for evaluation in complex institutions. More information is available here.
