Professional Development for Teachers of American History

April 13, 2009

WCER researcher Shihmei Barger is working with the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, the Madison School District, and the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater to evaluate a teacher professional development project called “Building Informed Citizens.” A grant from the U.S. Department of Education funds this project, which aims to raise student achievement by increasing teachers’ knowledge and understanding of U.S. history. Each year, the project focuses on a core topic. The three annual themes are (a) roots and ideas of American democracy (b) becoming an American—immigration and migration, and (c) America in the world.
