Enhancing Science Literacy with Multiple Resources

September 25, 2012

Since 2007, middle school students in Waunakee, Wisconsin have made strong gains in science achievement as a result of using a technology-enriched learning environment. They and their teachers use a curriculum developed by education professor Sadhana Puntambekar to learn physics in the context of design challenges and real-world problems. The percentage of 8th-grade students scoring proficient or advanced on the science portion of the state assessment increased from 89.0% to 95.3%. The percentage scoring advanced has increased from 45.5% to 67.8%. The students use innovative technology that offers multiple opportunities to read, write experiment and explain science phenomena.
