Spanish Academic Language Standards & Assessment

March 5, 2012

WIDA staff are collaborating with the Illinois State Board of Education to develop and implement academic Spanish language development standards for students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. These standards will address social & instructional language, the language of language arts, language of mathematics, language of science, and language of social studies. They’re also developing a Spanish language proficiency assessment for Kindergarten and Grades 1-2 based on those standards, and designing a test for obtaining baseline measurements of students' Spanish language proficiency for Grades K-2. These standards and assessments will help educators learn about academic Spanish language development, monitor students' progress, and shape instruction and curriculum to enable students to achieve high academic standards in Spanish.
