New Working Paper Explores Students' Mathematics Views and Interpretations

April 10, 2006

A new working paper has been posted. Mitchell J. Nathan and Kristen N. Bieda investigate middle school mathematics students’ views and interpretations of graphical representations as they use graphs to answer algebraic questions. From data gathered in videotaped interviews, Nathan and Bieda analyzed students’ verbal responses as well as any gestures they used during the solution or answer phases. Gestures provided a window into students’ views and predicted student performance on complex tasks more effectively than speech.
