Aligning Instruction and Standards
Aligning Instruction and Standards

A new set of tools is helping science educators compare their instruction with that of other teachers, schools, and districts, and to review the degree of alignment between local instruction and state standards and assessments. This approach to analyzing and improving instruction, titled "Surveys of the Enacted Curriculum," was field tested and improved with the help of science and math teachers from hundreds of U.S. schools.

WCER researcher John Smithson and colleagues have developed an efficient, reliable survey system for collecting and reporting data on the enacted curriculum in K-12 science and math education.

Data from the surveys system can help districts and schools close the achievement gap and improve instruction in schools identified for improvement under the NCLB Act. Data can also be used in professional development workshops and discussions with colleagues on best strategies for improving instruction.
