Book Explores College Access for the PoorJuly 17, 2006 Sara Goldrick-Rab is coauthor of the forthcoming book, “Putting Poor People to Work: How the Work-First Idea Eroded College Access for the Poor.” Goldrick-Rab and colleagues argue that recent U.S. policy reforms effectively steer former welfare recipients away from an education that could further their career prospects, forcing them directly into the workforce where they often find only low-paying jobs with little opportunity for growth. Since the passage of recent “work-first” laws, not only do fewer low-income individuals pursue postsecondary education, but when they do, they are increasingly directed towards ineffective, short-term forms of training, rather than higher-quality college-level education.
