Creating a Better PortfolioJuly 10, 2006 Effective teaching portfolios are created according to four basic ideas. Portfolios are designed and compiled with a specific purpose in mind; are developed for a specific audience; contain written reflective statements (for example about student learning, teacher practice, teaching-as-research, diversity, and learning community); and contain evidence like lesson plans, data about student learning, instructional materials, and other documents that support the ideas in your reflective statements. A Teaching Portfolio Guidebook (free download, 20 pages PDF) has been developed for teacher-researchers in the UW-Madison DELTA program. It offers suggestions including various approaches to portfolio organization, making a portfolio presentable, identifying a portfolio’s purpose, and focusing on intellectual skills, motivational skills, and interpersonal skills.
