Creating a Performance Culture

In K-12 education, paying teachers for student achievement could have a role in supporting other programs already in place, says CPRE director Allan Odden. Group incentives provide a motivation for workers to encourage their peers to do what needs to be done to earn the incentive for the group. Group incentives can also contribute to workers feeling that they are “all in this together” and to enhance focus on group goals. But paying teachers for improved student achievement needs to be part of a multifaceted strategy. A district needs to be concerned about teacher competencies and performance enablers, especially in schools and classrooms at the bottom of the performance distribution.
