Data-Driven Instructional Systems

January 17, 2006

It is the rare educational leader who is able to negotiate the local tangle of tradition and politics to successfully improve learning for students. New methods and new technologies are needed, and Richard Halverson is developing tools to access, represent, and communicate successful instructional leadership practices for school leaders. "Data-driven instructional systems" are an interconnected system of curriculum, pedagogy, professional development, and assessment practices that leaders build to improve student learning. Halverson's study, funded by a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award, is defining the knowledge, experience, structures, and practices local school leaders bring to bear in designing and implementing a local data system.
