Epistemologies of Practice Professions like architecture, engineering, mediation, medicine, and journalism can serve as models for education in traditional disciplines like math, science, and social studies. UW-Madison education professor David Williamson Shaffer and colleagues use design experiments to explore how computers and other new media make it possible to use techniques from the professions to learn by doing. Students can learn geometry, for example, in a graphic design studio; learn ethics through simulated negotiations; and learn technological fluency and civic engagement through web-based journalism. Williamson Shaffer uses examples like these to explore pedagogies that may help students think and learn in more powerful ways using new tools.
