Evaluating Principals' Performance

October 16, 2006

Do principals who receive high ratings under standards-based evaluation systems have a more positive impact on elements of school culture? Do standards-based evaluation systems help principals improve their performance in those domains that influence student achievement? These questions are among those investigated by staff at WCER’s Consortium for Policy Research in Education. Of all school-related effects on student achievement, principal quality is second in importance only to teacher quality. Given increasing accountability demands, school districts have been turning to new ways to improve principal performance and hold principals accountable. One such method is through performance evaluation, and this study examines one district's innovative, standards-based principal evaluation system. More information is available here.
