Implementing Disciplinary Literacy

May 22, 2006

With help from the Institute for Learning and WCER’s SCALE project, the Providence Public School District is implementing Disciplinary Literacy in mathematics as a framework to increase the instructional capacity of schools and teachers. Disciplinary Literacy (DL) is defined as mastery of both the core ideas and concepts and the habits of thinking of one or more disciplines. SCALE researcher Paula White analyzed the district’s implementation of DL in middle school mathematics and found that the IFL has influenced the district’s adaptation of the DL framework in several ways, including the development and use of the DL model, recognition of the importance of refining and redefining the system in response to experience, and shared assistance and expertise among SCALE district partners.
