Learning in Hypertext Enviornments

Hypertext environments are increasingly being used in education. Hypertext allows more learner control and allows learners to decide what links to follow and in what order. Professor Sadhana Puntambekar designs and studies interactive technologies for helping middle school students learn science. Her CoMPASS project aims to understand the cognitive and contextual issues in integrating hypertext in design-based science classes. The software system CoMPASS uses conceptual and text representations to help students see the multiple relationships between science concepts and phenomena. Puntambekar has found that dynamic concept maps help students stay focused on their goals, as compared with an index version of the system.
