Learning Sciences Research Crosses Boundaries

Compared with other areas of educational psychology, the application of learning sciences is a relatively new, yet rapidly developing field. Learning sciences takes a broad approach to principles of learning and draws from several  theoretical perspectives and research paradigms. Researchers in the learning sciences attempt to understand the nature and conditions of learning, cognition, development, and related areas of human performance. They investigate cognition in its material, social, and cultural contexts. The intent of learning science research is to develop evidence-based claims about how people learn that have theoretical and practical implications.

UW-Madison faculty conducting research in learning sciences include Martha Alibali, Sharon Derry, James Paul Gee, Arthur Glenberg, Richard Halverson, Charles Kalish, Eric Knuth, Mitch Nathan, Sadhana Puntambekar, David Williamson Shaffer, and Kurt Squire.
