Making College More AccessibleMay 21, 2007 Wisconsin high school graduates from low income families are much less likely to attend college even when they have the same academic qualifications as wealthier students. This has significant consequences for those students and their families, and reduces the quality of life for the entire state. Governor Doyle recently proposed the Wisconsin Covenant to make college more accessible to low-income residents. A WISCAPE Policy Brief, co-authored by WCER researcher Sara Goldrick-Rab and WISCAPE Faculty Affiliate Douglas Harris, explains why the Covenant is an important policy and how the proposal should be designed to best achieve its objectives—and at a reasonable cost. WISCAPE Policy Briefs highlight the issues and challenges facing postsecondary education while providing policy makers and others with knowledge and insight based on the latest research in the field.
