Maths In Context Continues Its Influence

Mathematics In Context Continues Its Influence

In 1990 Tom Romberg and colleagues began developing a new middle school mathematics program, Mathematics in Context, with funding from the National Science Foundation. MiC was designed to reflect the content, teaching and assessments standards proposed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

With input from a group of U.S. middle school teachers and researchers at the Freudenthal Institute at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, 40 student booklets (10 units each for grades 5-8) were developed, with teachers' guides and assessments for each unit. The complete program was published in 1998.

The number of schools using MiC during the 2001-2002 school year was estimated to be about 4,000, with a combined student population of over 2,000,000 students, according to the publisher, Encyclopaedia Britannica. The materials have recently been translated into Spanish.
