U.S. Education Department funds WCER's CCE Center
WCER’s new "Coordination, Consultation, and Evaluation Center for Implementing K-3 Behavior and Reading Intervention Models," also known as the CCE Center, is a five-year, $1.2 million-per-year project funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services. The Center provides technical assistance and consultation to six other research centers and is directed by WCER Associate Director Stephen Elliott and Thomas Kratochwill, professors of school psychology. WCER will be the home of a new National Science Foundation Center for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, the "Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning" (CIRTL). This five-year, $2-million-per-year center will fund development and implementation work to strengthen the quality of learning and teaching of undergraduate math and science, first at UW-Madison, and then at other research universities. Co-investigators are Robert Mathieu and Carol L. Colbeck. The center will address three goals: enhancing the content knowledge and pedagogical skills of current and future faculty; building the infrastructure of higher education faculty as a community of educators who prepare and sustain STEM educators; and supporting research into STEM higher education, spanning baccalaureate through graduate levels. Many WCER projects focus on issues of equity and diversity in K-12 and higher education. Equity, for example, is a theme in the new National Science Foundation-funded center, "Diversity in Mathematics Education: Building Infrastructure for Learning and Teaching Mathematics with Understanding"; in Stephen Elliott's work on accommodations and alternative assessments (see http://www.wcer.wisc.edu/archive/aoa); and in the current projects in special education housed at WCER. |
