Online Resource for Math, Science Teachers
The Learning Through Technology (LT2) Web site offers resources for science, mathematics, engineering and technology instructors. The site features information designed to provide knowledge on technologies in use and how this technology can impact and enhance student learning.
The site http://www.wcer.wisc.edu/archive/nise/Research_Programs.asp was constructed by the College Level One Team of WCER's National Institute for Science Education (NISE). The team focused on technologies with a preference for those that were student-centered, and where the use of this technology had a clear and measurable effect on learning.
Here's a brief description of the Web site's main sections:
- Introduction This contains a brief introduction of the LT2 Web site, its goals, a list of the Advisory Board members and the Fellows who have been the driving force behind this Institute.
- Solution to your classroom challenges This section provides short stories that describe what some technology innovators and adapters are doing and the types of problems they are solving. Sections can be sorted either by discipline, institution, type of technology use, or by author.
- Colleagues' opinions about technology Instructors who used technology both as novices and as experts, were asked what their opinions were about the use of technology. For instance, "Did you feel overwhelmed by the technology?".
- Case studies Several institutions where technology has been thoroughly integrated into a course or department were investigated. Site visits were performed by the College Level One's Institute for Learning Technology and interviews were conducted of key practitioners, administration, department chairs, the support staff, and students. After transcribing and coding the interviews, a case study was developed to provide a rich, in-depth resource laden with comments from the key participants for other adapters, innovators, and those just curious, to see how technology is being used to teach students.
- Resources This last section contains assessment tools, a list of helpful people near home, a quicklinks page highlighting the various software and Web sites referred to by the case study key practitioners and vignette authors, and a glossary of technical term.
