Partnerships Advance Science Instruction

August 20, 2007

Ten Wisconsin school districts and the UW-Madison are collaborating to improve middle school students’ achievement in science through professional development opportunities for their science teachers. The Science Masters Institute is part of WCER’s SCALE Mathematics and Science Partnership Program. An MSP encourages scientifically based professional development as a means for improving student academic performance. The Institute provides content and inquiry-based teacher professional development to meet several objectives: increase science teachers’ content knowledge, improve instruction, enhance curriculum implementation, raise student achievement, and reduce the achievement gap. Partnerships are designed and facilitated by a UW-Madison faculty member in science or engineering and a Madison School District secondary science resource teacher. Partnership grants are helping more than 600 Wisconsin school teachers in 77 school districts. More information is available here.
