Professional Practices as Learning ModelJune 5 , 2006 Alternate Routes to Technology and Science (ARTS) offers K-12 students technology-based learning environments based on professional practices. In a Virtual Zoo, for example, students learn physics by working as biomechanical engineers to design virtual creatures. In Ecology 2020, students learn ecology by working as urban planners to investigate sustainable development options for their towns or cities. The ARTS project is directed by David Williamson Shaffer with funding from the National Science Foundation's Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program. More about David's work is available here.
