For the Sake of the Baby
For the Sake of the Baby

Baby FAST, a prevention program for infants ages 0 to 3, applies the new brain research and builds social capital for new mothers. Developed by Lynn McDonald, this research- based, family support process brings together families of new mothers (especially high school teenagers) to build and enhance the relationships of young new parents. In weekly meetings, young mothers and their infants interact with a supportive adult—preferably the new mother's grandmother—and with the fathers, peers who do and do not have new babies, and child-serving community agency professionals. Program outcomes include increased healthy child development, improved parent-teenager relationships, improved peer-to-peer and multi-generation social capital, and reduced child abuse and neglect.
