Software Aids Video Analysis

Education researchers need to manage stacks of data, sometimes including hundreds or thousands of hours' worth of video data. Current video analysis tools are not generally able to select small portions of media files across dozens of individual classroom observation sessions. Nor are they able to extract analytically interesting selections for further study by other analysis tools.

WCER researchers Christopher Thorn, Christopher Fassnacht, and colleagues developed a software package called Transana to help researchers with their work (see www.transana.org). Now they are taking some of the best features of software tools they have developed, rewriting them using open source technologies, and fielding them for multiple platforms. Thorn and colleagues are encouraging other developers to take advantage of the released source code to suggest improvements and other extensions.
