Standards-Based Teacher Evaluation and CompensationOctober 3, 2006 States or school districts interested in using standards-based teacher evaluation as the basis for a knowledge- and skill-based pay system may want to consider these steps, according to researchers at WCER's Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE). 1. Embed evaluation and pay innovation within the district’s or state’s overall instructional improvement strategy. Otherwise they will likely be viewed as “just another program.” 2. Prepare for additional workload on teachers being evaluated and administrators doing the evaluation. Some reduction in other responsibilities while teachers are undergoing evaluation would decrease the perception of burden and sense of stress. 3. Prepare teachers and administrators thoroughly. Simply communicating about the system is not enough. Training will be necessary for teachers and administrators. |
