Study of Standards-Based Leadership Evaluation

June 27, 2005

School principals establish and influence conditions that affect student achievement. However, research has not yet resulted in a definitive model of the competencies these leaders need to have. With funding from the U.S. Department of Education's Institute for Education Sciences, researcher Tony Milanowski is embarking on a study that will address the knowledge gap in school leadership evaluation by answering these research questions: (1) Is there evidence that standards-based leadership evaluation is a promising practice for guiding principals' efforts to improve student achievement? and (2) To what extent are medium-sized and large school districts using standards-based leadership evaluation, and how well are these evaluation systems aligned with other district human resource management systems (e.g., selection, compensation, professional development) and with district strategies to improve student achievement?
