Teacher Logs as a Tool for Studying Educational Process

Teacher logs can be used in large-scale research on teaching, and data from teacher logs can be used to investigate methodological and substantive questions about classroom instruction. In a recent paper, Eric Camburn and colleagues focus on data collected as part of the Study of Instructional Improvement (SII). The study collected data on approximately 150,000 reading/language arts and mathematics lessons carried out by approximately 2000 teachers working in 115 high-poverty elementary schools during the 2000-2001 to 2003-2004 school years. For most study purposes, administration of somewhere around 20 logs should allow researchers to reliably discriminate instructional practices in the area of reading/language arts across teachers and schools.
