Teacher Quality Enhancement

April 2, 2007

Title II of the Higher Education Act – specifically, the Teacher Quality Enhancement Grants – enables K-12 schools and institutions of higher education to form partnerships for improving teacher preparation and to target critical needs, for example, developing teachers of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Through its SCALE project, one of WCER's partners for its work in Los Angeles is California State University-Dominguez Hills (CSU-DH), which prepares many teachers for the Los Angeles School District. Working with SCALE, CSU-DH won a Teacher Quality Enhancement grant to provide professional development to Los Angeles math and science teachers. This award has permitted the scaling up of SCALE's work in mathematics and science immersion in Los Angeles, which is the focus of a National Science Foundation-funded study led by Geoffrey Borman and Adam Gamoran. This project represents a partnership between a major urban school district, a major research university (UW-Madison), and a high-minority, university-based teacher training program (CSU-DH), working together on teacher quality with funding from NSF and the U.S. Department of Education.
