Teaching-as-Research

August 18, 2008

Instructors in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) can become the agents for change through a process called teaching-as-research.  Teaching-as-research involves the systematic and reflective use of research methods to develop and implement teaching practices that advance the learning experiences and outcomes of students and teachers. Questions considered in the process include: What is known about the teaching practice? What do we want students to learn? How can we help students succeed with the learning objectives?  What evidence will we need to determine whether students have achieved learning objectives? What will we do in and out of the classroom to enable students to achieve learning objectives? How will we collect and analyze information to determine what students have learned? and How will we use what we have learned to improve our teaching?  CIRTL offers a Teaching-as-Research Developmental Framework as a touchstone for program developers, instructors, and facilitators as they develop the learning goals and evaluation plans for the participants in their programs. Visit the Web page where you can download the framework as a PDF.
