Teaching Mathematics For Social Justice

When teaching mathematics for social justice, teachers face several challenges. For example, how do they perceive social justice in relation to their students? How do they open the classroom to discussions of racism? WCER’s Diversity in Mathematics Education (DiME) project addresses such issues. A study by DiME participant Tonya Bartell describes teachers’ work in a graduate course aimed at learning to teach mathematics for social justice. She found that teachers grapple with reconciling their personal lives with discussions of social justice. And some teachers initially did not want to confront issues of racism in their lessons, feeling it would be “too controversial,” or too difficult “to do” in a short amount of time.
