Training for Predoctoral ResearchJanuary 22, 2007 Hundreds of new programs in education have been implemented with little solid evidence about their success. Within schools, teachers have little access to systematic knowledge about the efficacy of available curricula. But NCLB has provided new incentives to choose policies and programs proven to boost student performance. Consequently, educators are motivated to find and use this information to make decisions. Building on the tools of measurement, design, and statistics in education and the social sciences, WCER’s Interdisciplinary Training Program for Predoctoral Research in the Education Sciences is training of a new generation of researchers who can bring the most rigorous tools of quantitative social science to bear on the practical problems of education. Students in WCER’s training program learn from an interdisciplinary team of 20 social scientists from 4 academic departments and 3 professional schools. Students serve internships in randomized field trials, collaborate with one another and with faculty across departments and schools, and conduct research that will inform policy decisions in education.
