Cathy Compton-Lilly

| Catherine Compton-Lilly taught in the public schools of New York State for 18 years. After receiving her doctorate in Curriculum and Human Development from the University of Rochester, she completed a Spencer/National Academy of Education Postdoctoral Fellowship that focused on the literacy experiences of adult GED students and their families. She is the author of Reading Families: The Literate Lives of Urban Children (Teachers College Press, 2003) and Confronting Racism, Poverty and Power, (Heinemann, 2004). Her next book, Rereading Families, is currently in press with Teachers College Press; it documents the literacy experiences of the families described in Reading Families as the children progress through elementary school. Dr. Compton-Lilly has recently been awarded a Spencer Small Grant that is enabling her to continue to follow these same children as they enter high school. Her research interests focus on literacy learning in urban communities. Catherine Compton-Lilly also directs the Reading Recovery Research and Learning Center at the University of Wisconsin Madison.
