| Hsun-yu Chan, Ed.M., M.S., is a fourth year graduate student in the Department of Educational Psychology, UW-Madison. Hsun-yu received his B.E. degree in school guidance and counseling from National Changhua University of Education, Taiwan in 2007. After college, Hsun-yu was drafted and served as a military counselor for a year. During the service, he helped soldiers with substance abuse problems, and he started to notice the impact of peers on substance use of young draftees. He then attended Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2008, where he received his master’s degree in human development and psychology and developed an interest in peer influence on risky behaviors. Hsun-yu joined the Department of Educational Psychology in 2009 under the advising of Dr. B. Bradford Brown. His primary research interest involves adolescent autonomy development, adolescent disclosure, and parental information seeking behavior, with special focus on peer-related information and peer influence. Hsun-yu is also involved in an NSF-funded research project on the accountability of one- and two-year manufacturing degree and certificate programs of the 16 Wisconsin Technical College System campuses, and his research interest focuses on how family members, peers, instructors, and academic advisors influence technical college students’ secondary and postsecondary academic achievement, career development, and employment in manufacturing.
