Preparing Elementary Teachers to Help Students Shift from Arithmetic to Algebraic Reasoning

Carpenter and colleagues are developing a professional development program to help teachers teach arithmetic in a way that not only increases students' understanding of arithmetic but also makes it easier for them to make the transition to algebra in later grades. The program helps students make generalizations about arithmetic that make powerful ideas available to them to solve problems and to learn more advanced mathematics.
