TalkBank: Multimedia Database of Communicative Interactions

TalkBank aims to foster fundamental research in the study of human and animal communication. TalkBank will provide standards and tools for creating, searching, and publishing primary materials via networked computers. Of the 15 disciplinary groups mentioned in the TalkBank proposal, six comprise the initial focus: Animal Communication, Classroom Discourse, Linguistic Exploration, Gesture and Sign, Text and Discourse, and Technical Development.
Chris Thorn is on the technical development team, whose goal is to establish an open source model for general-purpose annotation tools, and to help develop the infrastructure (APIs, formats) that will underpin the development of these tools.
