H.F. DeLuca Forum, Discovery Building, 330 N. Orchard St.

Ellen Lupton

Founding Director, Graphic Design MFA, MICA and Curator, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum

Ellen Lupton, one of the most influential educators in contemporary graphic design, explores how designers create compelling experiences to touch people’s minds and emotions. She will share how we move, act and respond when we look at a poster, website or road sign, while using fun and surprising examples of design to help you master the art of the narrative. She also will discuss her most recent book, Extra Bold: A Feminist, Inclusive, Subversive, Nonbinary Field Guide for Graphic Design.

A writer, curator and graphic designer, Ellen Lupton is director of the Graphic Design MFA program at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, where she also serves as director of the Center for Design Thinking. Her book Thinking with Type (2004) is used by students, designers, and educators worldwide. As curator of contemporary design at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum since 1992, she has produced numerous exhibitions and books, including Mechanical Brides: Women and Machines from Home to Office (1993), Mixing Messages: Graphic Design and Contemporary Culture (1996), Letters from the Avant-Garde (1996), and Skin: Surface, Substance + Design (2002).

This event is part of the Wisconsin Ideas in Education Series, an interdisciplinary speaker series intended for educators and future educators across campus. It is organized by early career faculty members from UW-Madison’s School of Education, with support from the Wisconsin Center for Education Research.
