New Study Examines Technology-Enhanced Items in English Language Proficiency Assessments

In a new study published in Language Assessment Quarterly, WIDA experts Alicia Kim and Mark Chapman, along with Rurik Tywoniw from the University of Illinois, explore how technology-enhanced items (TEIs)—which are more interactive than multiple-choice items (MCIs)—affect student performance on English language proficiency assessments in Grades 1-12.

Study findings indicate that TEIs were generally slightly more difficult than MCIs and took longer to complete. TEIs are best suited to students in higher grades and at higher ability levels.
